Expansion step 2035
The Swiss Federal Parliament has approved investments amounting to CHF 12.9 billion across Switzerland for the rail expansion step 2035 (STEP ES 2035). For the Canton of Zurich, the expansion step is essential for the continued development of the Zurich S-Bahn.
In late October 2018, the Swiss Federal Council referred its dispatch on the expansion of rail infrastructure up until 2035 to parliament, which made minor additions to the list of projects to be financed and ultimately approved the investments in June 2019.
Various major projects are planned for the greater Zurich area, which aim at eliminating major bottlenecks and enabling further expansion of services on the Zurich S-Bahn network. At an informational event in November 2018, ZVV and representatives of the FOT and SBB provided information about the scope and impact of the expansion in the greater Zurich area.
